You Too Can Do It
When I was growing up in Hong Kong, there was a kid’s program called “You Too Can Do It’. This show was about helping kids and making their dreams come true. It was a 30 minutes show. Each show would select one kid. At the beginning of each show the kid would tell the host ‘I want to become this when I grow up’. The whole show was about how this program could make his or her dream come true. What a concept!
I remember in one episode a little boy wanted to become a pilot. The show first dressed him up like a pilot; the pilot hat, the shiny white shirt and the dark pants. The little boy was ready with his full gear on. After the make over, they arranged a real pilot to meet with the little boy. The real pilot spent half a day with the little boy and taught him how to fly. By the end of the 30 minute show, the little boy was sitting right next to his new partner, as a copilot in a Boeing 737. The two of them were smiling. The little boy was sitting in the pilot’s seat. He started the engine, looked at the control panel intensely and got the plane ready. Both of them turned around and looked at the camera with their thumbs up. The little boy changed right in front of our eyes from being nervous and excited to confident and self assured.
I still remember this show vividly. I remember asking myself at the time ‘What do I too want to become?’ I wanted to experience the excitement on that little boy face; the joy, the hope. If he can do it, I too can do it.
How about you? What do you too want to become when you grow up?

I remembered this particular show too! Was this a mini-show within the “430 Space Shuttle” kids program? Another episode I remembered was a kid who wanted to become an ice-cream guy.
