Networking Spots You Must Visit if You Are New to America

Last week I taught networking skills to a group of immigrant professionals who are new to San Francisco. After the class, several of them came to me and ask “Now I know how to network, where can I go and practice my skills?”

I wanted to say you can pretty much network everywhere you go, but I guess if you are new to the country, more structured events or groups will probably be easier for you to get started.

Here are a few suggestions I gave to my students:

Networking Websites You Must Visit

  • Local newspaper websites
  • Learning Annex (in major US Cities)
  • (in major US Cities)
  • (in California)

Networking Groups You Must Visit (at Least Once)

  • Professionals Group / Trade Associations
  • Ethical Groups
  • Animal Clubs (Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, Elks, Moose)
  • Special Interest Groups (whatever floats your boat including hiking, singing or dancing)

Networking Events You Must Visit (at Least Once)

  • Anniversaries Parties
  • Birthday Parties
  • Charity Date Auctions
  • Classical / Pop Concerts
  • Conventions / Conferences / Trade Shows
  • Company / Office Parties
  • Dinner Parties
  • Happy Hour
  • Flea Markets/ Farmers Markets
  • Non Profit / Fundraising events
  • Parades / Street Fairs
  • Poker Game (even you don’t know how)
  • Pop Concerts
  • Potluck Parties
  • Seminars / Workshops
  • Speech Dating Events

Think About This…

If you meet one new person in each networking website, group or event listed above this year, you will meet at least 32 people!

Just Do This…

Just pick one new networking event to go to this month. Have fun and practice your networking skills!  If you forget how to network, check out The 7 Rules of Networking Made Easy.

Hi Edith - thanks for the networking ideas. To add a testimonial, I’d found meetup.com a few months ago and finally attended my first meeting a few weeks ago. Even though there were only about a dozen folks in attendance, I walked away with 3 solid prospects. Not bad. I’d also recommend, if you already have customers, to ask them what trade groups or associations they belong to and then see about joining those - you’ll find that you have instant credibility with other members if they know you’re doing work for “one of their own”. Again, thanks for the ideas…
