Are You Offering Something that They Really, Really Want?
Are You Offering Something that They Really, Really Want?
My friend Jen (who works for eBay) was telling me about the highest charitable bid ever made; it was for a piece of paper… I didn’t believe it at first, but this piece of paper was no ordinary paper. To be more precise, it was a letter. A letter signed by 41 senators addressed to radio personality Rush Limbaugh.
The Story Behind this Letter
After Rush Limbaugh offended Senator Reid by his comment about the war, Clear Channel (Limbaugh’s parent company) received a letter of complaint signed by 41 Democratic senators.
To everyone’s surprise Limbaugh decided to auction off this letter on eBay. The auction was closed on October 19th 2007 with a record-breaking winning bid of 2.1 million dollars. Limbaugh also pledged to match the price, dollar for dollar totaling 4.2 million dollars with the money going to the Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation.

Was it worth it?
This story really makes me think. Well… Even if I have millions of dollars in the bank, I would probably never buy this. But to Betty Casey, it was worth it. Betty is a philanthropist, a fan of Limbaugh and also a collector of historical memorabilia. It was the perfect item for her and she was more than happy to pay the price.
A Piece of Paper
To us, it was a piece of paper. To Betty, it was a priceless collector’s item.
When you are offering something that someone really, really wants, you have a business.
When you are offering something that is one of a kind, you have a business.
When you are offering something that someone really, really wants and it is truly one of a kind, you have a big business.
Stop confusing your customer. Offer something that is of true value. Something they really really want and become the one of a kind.
